Kristin Newman has been an athlete pretty much her whole life. A ballet dancer to start, then a national level judo wrestler, a momentary endurance runner, and now a powerlifting-Olympic weightlifting-crossfit butt-kicking badass.

Through all her years of athleticism, Kristin’s shoulders took a beating to a point where she had to get double shoulder surgery this past year to restore the joints to normal function.

Kristin came to us with years of Olympic lifting already under her belt having been taught and influenced by some of the best coaches in our sport. Kristin’s pull mechanics are very powerful allowing her to leverage her hips and back into the bar to direct the weight. This worked great for the clean, but caused the snatch to be a bit more on the unpredictable and wily side for the current state of her shoulder.

After some time trying to get the shoulder to adapt to her “old” lifting technique, I suggested we try retooling her lifting mechanics so that it would help put her shoulders into a more predictable location when she went under the bar. Open to change, we’ve spent the last 4 weeks rerouting how she moved.

We weren’t really sure how it would go using separate techniques for snatch and clean&jerk, but we figured it was better than not being able to snatch consistently since it’s half the competition. Trial by fire came yesterday during Max’s Gym Open where Kristin went 6 for 6 making all her snatches (without pain) and clean&jerks totaling 175kg (73kg snatch, 102kg clean&jerk). This sets Kristin up for a post surgery PR in both lifts and qualified her for the A session at The American Open in Dallas, TX this December. Congratulations Kristin Newman!
