FuBarbell coach + athlete Kristin Newman (@strength_geek) is not only a national level Olympic-style weightlifter, she also carries an elite total in powerlifting and is about to qualify for nationals in strongman. A modern day physical culturist, Kristin is here today with a post about the application of straps.

"You don’t want hand pain from over-use or torn callouses to get in the way of your training. That’s where straps come in.

For Olympic lifting we’ll use them whenever we have to do multiple heavy reps, reps from the hang, or tempo work. It allows us to focus on our movements instead of focusing on our grip or the stabbing pain in our thumbs. We never use them in the clean, though we will use them for pulls of both lifts.

In powerlifting, I’ll use them in my deadlift training for my drop sets or after my first heavy working set. I’ve proven that I can hold onto the bar already, so after that I want to just focus on the work that will get me stronger and save my grip for the next exercise.

Some strongman events allow you to use straps in competition, and in those cases, I’ll use a pair that has a longer tail which I will wrap around the bar, axle, or farmer’s handles several times. They are also great for overload training in the deadlift and for farmer’s walks.
