Getting beginners to learn how to engage and load the legs in a back squat can be challenging if they’ve never had any/have had very little experience with barbell movements. An easy and safe way to introduce the feeling of load is to use a PVC pipe across the upper back while gently pulling down on it during the descent to simulate the feeling of weight on the body. The idea is to have the athlete meet the resistance while mimicking the tempo of the squat. In the wise words of Wim Hof, “feeling is understanding”.
