A few days ago, I posted a photo comparison of 4 different clean set-ups. The question that punched through consistently was, “which one is the best?” My answer to that is all of them and none of them. One mold will not fit all, and a better question posed by friend, @wilfleming, was “what are the commonalities you see?”

Variances in set-up are due to the structural differences of the athlete. Athletes will then also tinker with these set-ups to match what feels most intuitive. And ultimately, a good set-up is intended to provide the athlete with a good initiation off the floor in order to continue building speed onto the barbell.

Commonalities in the set-up:

1. Feet straight forward to slightly angled out with the grip slightly outside shoulder width.

2. Bar is lined up at mid-foot to base of the toes.

3. Hips slightly to well above the knees.

4. Shoulders over to slightly ahead of the bar.

5. Eyes up towards the horizon or higher.

With that said, check out this athlete’s set-up. It is a set-up not as commonly seen these days, but can work well for certain individuals. Who can tell me the history behind this technique?
