Week 3 of practicing the timing and technique of the lat pull + quad punch. First video is from practice yesterday at the top of the session where you can see my traps and lats coming in too early/fast prior to my legs extending. Second video is 2 hours later trying out different cues and lines of thought to coordinate the body better. The timing is much better on the second lift yielding a pull that is more accurate, stable and ends up driving the barbell higher even after 2 hours of training. I’m pretty sure I snatched 65kg a zillion times during this session.

Last Saturday I did some power cleans off the blocks trying to time the usage of my lats and quads. My timing was off and was only able to make 75kg/165lbs. After some lengthy discussions with Jon (@iamjwjw) and Coach Wu (@wuchuanfu), I’m starting to figure out the timing much better. Today I gained 5kg on this lift and made 80kg/176lbs which is also a lifetime PR power clean from the blocks. Still not a finished product, but it’s moving in the right direction.

I’ve been learning about Chinese-style WL methods now for almost 8 months. Through many long Skype sessions and my personal interpretation of Coach Wu’s (@wuchuanfu) explanations, I was able to start changing my movement patterns to start matching what I felt was a closer representation of this WL style.

It wasn’t until Jonathan Wong (@iamjwjw) came through last week that the process became clearer of the involvement of the lats and quads. My timing is still a bit off here, but 75kg/165lbs did feel pretty crisp racking on the shoulders.

Jonathan Wong (@iamjwjw), student of Coach Wu (@wuchuanfu), came through for a visit last week in San Francisco. We spent much of the time training and discussing concepts taught to us by Coach Wu of Chinese weightlifting philosophy. We decided to put out a series of posts to help everyone further understand the message that is being delivered from out East. Enjoy.

Just got off Skype with Coach Wu (@wuchuanfu). Sounds like his seminars in London and Manchester are a big success! Here is one of the first videos Coach Wu sent me demonstrating “the effective use of strength” which is a literal translation of how Coach Wu perceives power transfer.

One of the first concepts Coach Wu (@wuchuanfu) talked to me about when we first started chatting about weightlifting was this idea of balancing the system. Through balance, the body can move with more efficiency essentially minimizing unnecessary muscular activation so that the energy created by the legs can get carried through more readily to the barbell.
